Thame valley Trekking Trail Cleaning Program 2021

The Thame Valley Trekking Trail Cleaning Program is a cleaning campaign program intended to collect the unmanaged garbage from the three major trekking/ peak climbing routes inside Thame Valley of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality-5, Solukhumbu, Nepal, deploying the local youths.

Objective & Outcome:

  • To collect the trash from the three major tourist destinations inside Thame Valley to keep the mountain environment clean.
  • To employ the local tourism workers who have been unemployed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and who are in need of financial support.

Results & Outcomes:

The Thame valley trekking trail cleaning program has had the following direct and indirect benefits to the community.
  • 1500 kilos of unorganized garbage in the tourist destinations of the Thame Valley area were collected to protect the mountain environment mainly from Kyajo Ri Peak (6,186m) the route between Mende and Kyajo Ri high camp, Tashilapcha Pass ( 5755m) from Thengbo and the garbage from Lungden to Renjola (5360m) was collected and brought to Namche and handed over to Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee ( SPCC ) for proper disposals.
  • Through this program, 30 unemployed tourism workers were provided short-term employment and some financial relief to such unemployed youths during this difficult time.
  • This program raised public awareness about waste management and environmental protection among the locals, youths, tea shop owners, trekking guides, and concerned bodies.
  • This program gave a better insight into unorganized garbage along the trail and will help concerned bodies manage waste in the future.
  • It helped to promote tourism directly/indirectly.
  • This program under the leadership and initiative of local organizations was an exemplary work in Nepal.
  • It spreads a message that the locals have a big role to play in making the tourist destinations clean and environment friendly.
